Service Description

After Dark: night swim This will be a design workshop. There will be no samples to examine. There will be something that we create together that was never created before. There will be documentation and reproducibility of the design. There will be no mercy without catharsis. This workshop is for someone who either has something specific in mind to make (design, form, pattern, etc.) or for someone who has never designed anything – don’t worry beginners we have the tools and a very imaginative teacher. The inspiration for writing this workshop comes from Stephen Sondheim’s (1884) musical Sunday in the Park with Goerge and the song “Finishing the Hat.” Look, I made a pot / Where no pot was before. Once upon a dusky evening, my mind was needing something different, some form of craving. The pond I passed swam two koi fish. They swam oddly sideways, their sideways body poised with one of their eyes at me staring, their mouths moving as if speaking. Both kept swimming as the sunset, orange light reflected off the surface making them invisible. The sky darkened as I watched them disappear. What were they saying, I wondered? And in a dream, I dreamt my answer came: Night Swim. The ocean called. Dark waters and salty spray like sirens calling, where ideas form within the purple black depths of my brain mirror the fading night sky. A dragon to chase was born: How could I express this on a piece of pottery with all my knowledge and tools? What is an image, color, or feeling you want to express? Are you the kind of person who gets creative at night? I am! Don’t think you could ever design something or just never “got” art? This is your class! Shall we create under incandescent bulbs or bust out the luminaries? Perhaps the chip and dip bowl will have a green slight spicey substance and crispy stuff for dipping, maybe even hot or cold beverages, perhaps we will share stories, perhaps there will be long silences, or perhaps nothing but production. This workshop will be regularly scheduled Monday Friday at 9:30-11:30pm, but I am also willing to schedule this at a time that works for you. Schedule in advance. This workshop is for beginners alike, but the more experience you have working with clay (I recommend at least one year), the better your final build will be. Beginners and advanced students will also have a follow-up session for refinement a
